Polymers΄ Physics & Chemistry
COURSE CONTENT
Physics of macromolecules. Chemical structure and synthesis. Linear-branched-network polymers. Internal structure-rotation.Molecular weights determination, mean molecular weights. Solid polymer classification-crystalline-amorphous states. Rubery state-mechanics of rubbery materials. Glassy state-glass transmission temperature. Thermal capacity and conductivity of polymers.Electrical properties. Viscoelastic properties of polymers – dynamic mechanical properties. Chemical properties of polymers. Polymer decomposition. Environmental and mechanical fatigue.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course aims to fulfill students with basic background to understand the relationship between macroscopical properties of polymers and their internal composition and structure. A step-by-step analysis of polymer synthesis and forming to plastics is presented. Polymers characterization methodologies and determination of their molecular weight. Polymer chemical properties are presented with etiologies in molecular and macroskopical level and classification. Polymer mechanics (viscoelastic properties) and its temperature dependence, as well transmission from amorphous to crystalline nature. Polymer structure-strength relationship and the role of physical/chemical alterations due to functional fatigue and environmental conditions as parts of machines and structures.
