Non Destructive Testing of Materials & Structures

COURSE CONTENT
Introduction in Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation, Reliability of NDT techniques, short overview of the most popular techniques, Optical inspection, Liquid penetrant inspection, Magnetic particles inspection, Eddy current inspection, Ultrasonic testing and inspection (basic principles of wave propagation in bulk elastic media and plates, reflection, refraction, Snell’s law, equipment and hardware, testing protocols, current trends and advancements, laboratory exhibition)
Acoustic Emission (signal analysis, acousto-ultrasonics), Radiography.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
The goal of this module is to offer to the student of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics the basic principles on several techniques of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) for the discontinuities location and characterization in materials and structures. A series of lectures on the most popular NDT techniques are presented, their basic principles explained, the associated equipment and the findings in typical applications discussed. Emphasis is given on discontinuities/flaws detection in metallic as well as in composite materials.
