COURSE CONTENT
Basic principles of atomic and molecular structure and chemical bonding. The states of the mater (gases-liquids and solids). Technical applications of nuclear energy, liquification of gases, freezing/heating. Technology of cements. Chemical kinetics and balance, energy balance. Electrochemistry, corrosion and protective methodologies. Water treatment, solutions, distillation. Basics of organic chemistry with applications in polymers.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
This course is an introduction into the basic chemistry science with special attention to the chemistry of materials and their procedures included into the broad discipline of Mechanical Engineering. Basic targets of the course are:
- To refresh and enhance basic knowledges of the atomic and molecular structure of materials and the interactions with their macroscopic properties (physical, chemical, mechanical), considering engineering inorganic and organic elements and compounds.
- To help students understanding different procedures (like phase transformations and chemical reactions) and the interaction with their energy content.
- To help students understanding the basic steps of procedures for mixing and separation of compounds (mixtures, solutions, distillation, water treatment), as well natural or artificial procedures (electrochemistry-corrosion).
